Dependent Origination

늘 들어도 이해가 안되고, 무명-행-식...-노사 라고 쉽게 이야기하는 12연기에 대한 보리스님의 명쾌한 해석에 머리가 시원하다. 서양인 특유의 이해가 될때까지의 집요함은 나의 대충-얼렁뚱땅 얼버무림을 무색하게 한다. 이 중요한 12연기를 너무나도 가볍게 생각한 내 불찰이 부끄럽다. 12연기는 바로 '윤회'의 고리를 차단하는 중요한 무기이다.

 

The ultimate purpose of the teaching on dependent origination is to reveal the conditions

that sustain the round of rebirths and thereby to show what must be done to gain the

release from the round. The round of rebirths revolves without discernible beginning.

(1) Ignorance  : Lack of direct knowledge of the Four Noble Thuths

(2) Volitional Foramation(Kamma) : Engage in wholesome and unwholesome activites of

      body, speech and mind

(3) Consciousness : Beginning from the moment of concept

(4) Name-and-Form : The sentient orgaism with its physical form and its sensitive and 

     cognitive capacity

(5) Six Sense bases : The five physical sense faculties  and the mind as organ of cognition.

(6) Contact : Occur between consciousenss and its objects

(7) Feeling : Called into play by feeling

(8) Craving : Arises, when craving intensifies it gives rise to

(9) Clinging : Tight attachment to the objects of desire through sensuality and wrong views

(10) New Existence : Impelled by our attachments, we again engage in volitional actions pregnant with new existence

(11) Birth : At death this potential for new existence is actualized in a new life beginning wirh birth 

(12) Aging-and- Death : ending

 

관문셈님의 열정과 자비로움으로 어려운 12연기에 대한 보리스님의 생각을 읽었다. 절로 감탄이 나온다. 와~ 그랬구나. 중요하다 못해서 부처님의 가르침의 골수를 이제서 만나다니...그런 아쉬움도 생긴다. 참으로 현실적이고 과학적인 설명이라는 생각이 왜 이제서 들까?  반갑고 고맙고...기쁘다.

 

송년모임으로 이어져서 마음을 풀고 그간의 노고와 공부의 진전을 이야기하고 웃고 또 웃었다. 올해처럼 내년에도 더 열심히 하자고 다짐도 했다. '청정도론'을 공부하자는 셈님의 제안에 왜 나는 그리도 설레이던지~ 이렇게 고맙고 또한 고마운 우리의 송년회가 되었다.
