닐바나

산스크리트어에서 'Nirvana 닐바나' 라는 단어가 중국사람들의 귀에는 '니에판(涅槃:열반)'으로 들려서 그렇게 한문을 골른 것을 우리는 우리나라식 한문 발음인 '열반'으로 쓴다. 이제는 한글로 '닐바나'라고 하는 것이 정확한 것이라 믿는다. 부처님의 네가지 성스런 가르침 (The Four Noble Truths- Dukkha, Samudaya, Niroda, Magga) 에 대한 공부를 하다보니 Niroda-The Cessation of Dukkha-가 곧 닐바나라는 사실을 알았다.

 

When he experiences a pleasant, unpleasant or neutral sensation, he knows that it is impermanent, that it does not bind him, that he experienced with passion. Whatever may be the sensation, he experiences it without being bound to it(visamyutto). He knows that all those sensations will be pacified with the dissolution of the body, such as the flame of a lamp goes out when oil and wick give out.

 

The realization of this Truth(Nirvana). i.e., to see things as they are without illusion or ignorance, is the extinction of craving 'thirst', and the cessation of Dukkha, which is Nirvana.
